Upgrading your car or motorcycle headlights to HID bulbs is a great idea if:

  • You want to feel safer driving in the dark
  • You’d like to save money over time
  • You fancy making your car look a bit cooler than it does right now

HID bulbs are much brighter and whiter than your typical standard halogen headlight bulbs. You don’t have to change them as often, either.

HID bulbs emit 3 times as much light as halogen bulbs which means no more eye-strain when driving in the pouring rain or when it’s pitch dark.

So, what makes HID bulbs brighter and whiter?

Well, HID stands for high-intensity discharge. Put crudely, an electrical charge is sent through a small box-like device called a ballast. The ballast regulates and circulates electricity into a glass chamber which contains a magnetic gas, usually xenon gas.

This electrical charge sends an arc between two nodes within the chamber. The arc creates a spark which heats up the xenon gas and generates a swirling mass of plasma. This activity creates a brilliant white light.

If your car is already fitted with factory HID lights, you only need to replace the bulb as a full HID conversion kit would be overkill.

Easy As ABC

Don’t be put off by all this scientific jiggery-pokery. Yes, it sounds complicated but replacing your headlights with HID bulbs couldn’t be easier.

As long as you can follow some simple instructions and you have an hour or so to spare, you’ll have that HID conversion kit installed fuss-free.

What’s An HID Conversion Kit?
As HID bulbs work differently to your regular halogen bulb, they are made slightly differently. That said, they still use the same connections as traditional bulbs.

When you purchase an HID conversion kit, it typically comes with the following components:

  • A pair of bulbs
  • A pair of ballasts with attached cables
  • Sticky pads for mounting the ballasts
  • Cable ties to secure any loose cables

Which HID Conversion Kit Should I Buy?
We offer 42 different HID conversion kits, each one suitable for certain car makes and models.

Don’t be overwhelmed by this huge selection of HID conversion kits, though. Once you know a few basics, you’ll be able to select the right type of kit for your ride.

You don’t need to know the features of each kit in detail. Simply use our search tool to find the correct kit for your car. Enter the year, make and model of your car, and hit SEARCH.
Bulb Color
Color is an important factor to consider when purchasing an HID conversion kit. If you’re accustomed to poor weather conditions like snow, rain, or dust, opt for a warmer bulb rated at 3000 or 4000 kelvin.

For clear conditions, you’re better off with whiter, brighter light with a higher kelvin rating between 6000 and 10000 kelvin.

The higher the kelvin rating, the cooler the color.

Our HID conversion kits come with a choice of four color bulbs to choose from:

  • Pure white
  • Bright white
  • Ice blue
  • Deep blue

You’ll want to take care here as the design of your headlights could influence the color outcome.
Types of Bulbs
The type of bulb you get for your headlights depends on whether your headlight has a project or a reflector housing.

  • Bulbs that fit in project housings are marked D*S
  • Reflector housings use bulbs that marked D*R

The most common bulbs used with HID kits are D1S and D2S bulbs for projector housings. Projector headlights have a lens the bulb sits behind. When the light is turned on, it focuses a beam of light through the lens.
Type of Ballast
A ballast is a small plastic box. Which ballast you decide on will depend on how bright you want to go. Most people opt for a 35-watt ballast, but there’s also a 55-watt ballast available.
Fitting Your HID Conversion Kit
Fitting your HID conversion kit is straightforward.

  • First, remove everything from the box
  • Next, take out the existing headlight by removing the plastic cap then twisting the bulb out of the fitting
  • Now, take your new bulb and screw it in place
  • The ballast won’t fit inside the headlight casing, so you’ll have to feed the wire through a grommet, and secure the ballast in the engine bay
  • When you’ve connected it all up, secure the ballast to the engine bay using the sticky pads and cable ties. Some kits come with small clips

And that’s it!
Relay Anti-flicker Upgrade

Our HID conversion kits come with an optional relay anti-flicker upgrade. This is a small device that enables you to power your lights directly from the car battery rather than using the factory wiring harness. This prevents any annoying flickering of your lights.

We highly recommend you purchase a relay anti-flicker if you opt for an HID conversion.
Early Warning Cancellers
As your car probably won’t detect your new HID headlights, you’ll get error warning messages on your dashboard alerting you that your headlights aren’t working. This can be a real pain.

Early warning cancellers stop this error message from appearing. You will certainly need an early warning canceller if you own any of these cars:

  • Audi
  • BMW
  • Chrysler
  • Dodge
  • Jeep
  • Mercedes
  • Ram
  • Volvo
  • Volkswagen

Well, hopefully you’ve got a good insight into choosing an HID conversion kit and the factors to consider when purchasing one.

You should also see how easy it is to install an HID conversion kit. It’s simply a case of swapping out the bulbs and connecting them to the external ballast.

When you’ve installed your HID conversion light, you’ll enjoy better vision at night, especially if you’re faced with inclement weather. You won’t need to change the bulbs again in a hurry, either.

And, don’t forget, your car will look much cooler with your new lights.
